Nintendo Wii Hacked, The Video [Clips]

Yesterday we told you about some hardware enthusiasts at the Annual Chaos Communication Congress who announced that they were able to hack the Nintendo Wii using a custom serial interface.
Their development will allow for all sorts of fun software, since Wii hacks up to this point haven’t been able to fully utilize Wii hardware, instead settling for watered down Gamecube-specific solutions like Gamecube Linux.
Here’s a clip of the announcement from 24C3.
Watch the whole thing if your a techie, or just skip to the end for the money shot.

Eee PC hacked for internal 3G HSDPA

This one’s definitely not for anyone concerned with warranties and whatnot, but those looking to expand their Eee PC’s wireless capabilities without resorting any unsightly adapters may want to check out the latest how-to from jkmobile, which gives you the rundown on adding internal 3G HSDPA to the diminutive laptop.
That, as you might have guessed, involves a fair bit of slicing and soldering, not to mention disassembling a standard 3G HSDPA modem (a ZadaCOM 3G+ HSDPA, in this case).
The process is apparently further eased if you have just the right Eee PC model, as the 8G’s 8GB SSD drive takes up too much room, and the earlier 4G models require some additional cutting to squeeze the modem in. Hit up the read link below for pics of the whole process and a video of the hack in action.

Firefox 3.0 Beta Take Two Even Better

We already walked you through the first beta of Firefox’s next major version 3.0, and today Mozilla released beta 2 for download by willing testers and impatient ‘fox users. The second beta plugs memory leaks (yippee!) and adds features like a new URL auto-complete display, smart bookmarks folders, and revamped download manager. Get more details about beta 2 goodness after the jump.

Notable beta 2 improvements from the release notes include:

* Location bar & auto-complete: type in all or part of the title, tag or address of a page to see a list of matches from your history and bookmarks; a new display makes it easier to scan through the matching results and find that page you’re looking for.
* Smart Bookmarks Folder: quickly access your recently bookmarked and tagged pages, as well as your more frequently visited pages with the new smart bookmarks folder on your bookmark toolbar.
* New Download Manager: the revised download manager makes it much easier to locate downloaded files, and displays where a file came from.
* Memory usage: Over 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use (by releasing cached objects more quickly) and reducing fragmentation. Beta 2 includes over 30 more memory leak fixes, and 11 improvements to our memory footprint.

Of course, this is a beta so you don’t want to move over to it full-time—unless you’re cool with some instability and incompatible extensions while the kinks get ironed out. The Firefox 3 Beta 2 is a free download for all platforms.

Use a Screensaver as Desktop Wallpaper with Wallsaver

Mac OS X only: Turn your desktop into a photo slideshow using freeware app Wallsaver.
Wallsaver is a very simple application written in AppleScript that replaces your wallpaper with the current screensaver.
Setting the wallpaper as Flurry (shown above) is pretty annoying, however, using your pictures folder is an excellent way to use your desktop as a digital picture frame.
A few months ago we showed Linux users how to get the same effect using a nautilus hack.

locoGPS hacks into the iPhone barrio

O sweet jeebus, could it be? Why yes, that’s the “stylish plastic enclosure” promised for the partfoundry GPS module iPhone hack.
At least, it’s the first rendered appearance.
Initially peeped over at Engadget Mobile on Friday, the newly named locoGPS module requires a Jail Broken iPhone to work.
A new video shows the SiRF Star III chip doing its positional thing in support of Google Maps.
The $89 hack remains on track for a February 2008 release — you know, around the time when the official SDK launches and presumably… hopefully, an official iPhone GPS module is announced.
