Apple OSX 10.5 hacked in one day

Leopard running on standard PCs

IN WHAT SEEMS record time, OSx86 scene has released details of a hack to allow the newest and greatest edition of OSX, ‘Leopard’, to run on a non-Apple computer.

Full details were released here on how to get the new operating system, only released earlier this week, running on your own ‘HackinTosh’.

Unfortunately, even if you own a legitimate copy of Leopard, this kind of tinkering is against Apple’s terms and conditions. Even more unfortunate, is the fact that Leopard torrents are already swamping the pirate scene.

The forum link consists of full instructions on how to install the OS, screenshots showing the installation process worked, and then feedback from the multitude who’ve grabbed the patched image torrent and are busy playing with their new installation of Leopard.

You’ll need at least an SS3 compatible processor to run the OS, similar to previous early releases of the hacked OS, which subsequently had SS2 patches released later on.

Sony selling the ATI TV Wonder CableCARD tuner all by its lonesome

Although Vista Media Center supports up to four CableCARDs, we haven’t actually seen the required ATI TV Wonder breakout box for sale by itself yet — it usually only comes bundled with a CableLABS-certified Vista Media Center PC.
(In fact, from what we hear, OEMs are strictly forbidden from selling them without a PC.) It looks like Sony’s ready to bust these things loose, however, because SonyStyle.com is now selling them as the “VAIO Digital TV Tuner” for $299.
You’ll still need that Vista Media Center PC with the required special firmware to make it work, but those of you itching to add more tuners to your rig — or just hack away at these things — might finally be able to make it happen.
Just don’t blame us of CableLABS’s locks prevent you from properly capturing all those delicious high def MPEG-2 streams.

PSP hooked up to third party GPS recievers

Using nothing more than a little fine soldering, it is possible to get your PSP to accept the data output from 3rd party GPS recievers from Holux, among others.
Like a lot of past PSP mods, this probably isn’t one for mere mortals: you’ll have to have a heavy dosing of leet skill to pull this one off, and be able to understand the gobbledegook that the custom executable throws up — although it will apparently work with Map This, a third party GPS and Map app for the PSP.
Nevertheless, it’s all there on the read link, so check it out if you dare.

The Pirate Bay Takes Over Anti-Piracy Domain

Palpatin writes to let us know that The Pirate Bay has now taken up residence at IFPI.com, a domain once owned by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
The Pirate Bay says the site will now promote the International Federation of Pirates Interests.
IFPI can still be reached at ifpi.org.
Torrentfreak has up a brief interview with Brokep, one of the administrators of The Pirate Bay, who says: “It’s not a hack, someone just gave us the domain name. We have no idea how they got it, but it’s ours and we’re keeping it.”

5G iPods hacked to run updated interface

It looks like those 5G and 5.5G iPods owners out there that have been feeling a little envious of the iPod classic’s slick new interface now have at least one option at their disposal to give their player a bit of a facelift, although it seems that only the most fearless need apply.
While it doesn’t go so far as to add the much-vaunted Cover Flow, the newly-released and entirely unofficial firmware hack (which ironically requires the Windows-only iPodWizard software) does seem to mimic most of the features in the latest interface, including the split screen design, and the revised now playing screen.
Not surprisingly, a number of users have reported that the hack has bricked their precious iPods, so you may want to reconsider your distaste for you iPod’s current interface — at least until all the kinks are worked out.

Chinese Security Site Under New Kind of Attack

SkiifGeek writes:
“The main site for the Chinese Internet Security Response Team (CISRT) has been serving up infrequent attacks against site visitors through the use of an injected IFRAME tag that attempts to download and install numerous pieces of malicious software.
While the source of the attack has yet to be identified, suspicion is that it might be an ARP attack being hosted by the CISRT’s hosting provider.
Rather than a straight-up infection attempt against all site visitors (as was the case with the Bank of India hack), it is an interesting evolution to see intermittent attack attempts against site visitors.”

iPhone 1.1.1 File System Accessed, Hacks Not Quite There

Good news! The iPhone 1.1.1 file system has been broken open as a result of two iPhone hackers inserting symbolic links into the file system of a 1.0.2 iPhone before updating. And with file system access, it means we’re one step closer to activating, then jailbreaking, and then enabling third-party applications. Erica at TUAW is liveblogging her progress, and we’ll update this post with more info as it comes in. TUAW

Update: The current status is file access, but no executable access and no shell access. This means that although you can look, you can’t run apps. With a little file fiddling, that should come very soon.

Update 2: Any dreams of using the Wi-Fi music store on 1.0.2, effectively negating one big reason to upgrade, have been squashed. It doesn’t work.

Update 3: Pash from Lifehacker tells us the whole third-party app scene has been totally quiet since the 1.1.1 launch. Both new apps and updates to old ones have been stagnant.

Update 4: They have read access to the entire disk, but write access is still limited.
