AUSSIE HACKERS have figured out a way of putting Apple’s Iphone on the nation’s Telstra network.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the hack, by a bloke called ozbimmer, is of limited use as you cannot use it to receive calls or send SMS messages. However it is the first one to unlock the Iphone for use outside the AT&T mobile network in the US.
Jon Johansen hacked the device to allow users to bypass the AT&T network to use the phone’s wireless internet and music features, but the phone function remained disabled until now.
Australia is unlikely to see an Iphone down under until next year. Ironically the company which is the frontrunner for Apple’s exclusive contract will be Telstra because the iPhone cannot manage 3G networks.
Steps on how to unlock the phone can still be found in a message ozbimmer posted to the hackint0sh online message board.
It involves creating your own SIM card using information taken from both the AT&T SIM card that comes with the iPhone and a Telstra SIM card.
