Acer has begun quietly introducing its Gemstone laptop to the US market by slipping the design-minded Aspire into Best Buy’s retail catalog, thus marking the debut of the company’s stylized new computer on these shores.
The 5920, which we mentioned back in May, is officially on sale now at the chain stores for $1299 (but they’ll want you to get that extended service plan too).
To refresh your memory, the system is based on the seemingly-ubiquitous Santa Rosa chipset, with a Centrino Core 2 Duo turning the gears, a 15.4-inch, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT-powered display, an HD-DVD RW drive, and 802.11a/b/g.
Other bells and whistles include Bluetooth, a 5-in-1 media reader, built-in webcam, and Acer’s amazing V.92 high speed modem.

THE BETA VERSION of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is scheduled to arrive within the next couple of weeks, according to Vole-spotters.
Posting on ZDNet, Mary Jo Foley suggests that the beta will arrive in the week of July 16, with the full release going out some time in November.
This would track with original Microsoft semi-unofficial estimates as to the timeline for a Service Pack, since Windows Server 2008 is also due to go RTM in November this year – and SP1 will almost certainly include a client update to revise the client in line with Server 08.
Many corporate clients – including, ironically, Intel and Dell – have been holding off deploying Vista to wait for the first Service Pack to improve performance and stability. Microsoft clearly knows this, and is looking to overcome that ‘wait for the first revision’ mentality ASAP.

El Departamento de Defensa Norteamericano ofrece un millón de dólares a cualquier inventor que diseñe una prenda ligera que pueda funcionar como fuente de alimentación.
Según Network World, el DoD (Department of Defence) quiere aligerar el peso que tiene que transportar un soldado en una misión de 4 dÃas. Según dicen, un soldado tiene que transportar más de 18 kilos de baterÃas y cargadores. Los soldados utilizan las baterÃas como fuente de energÃa para sus radios, dispositivos de visión nocturna, sistemas de posicionamiento global y otro material de combate.
Quieren aligerar el peso hasta los 3,6 kilos y el DoD está tratando de hacer lo mismo que la DARPA (Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency), la cual ha tenido mucho éxito en iniciativas similares.
Al concurso se puede presentar cualquiera, con la única limitación de que el lider del proyecto ha de ser un ciudadano norteamericano. Esto puede ser debido a que de otro modo, el DoD no podrÃa anunciarlo como un invento americano.
Si se hubiese aplicado el mismo criterio a las invenciones pasadas, los Estados Unidos no hubiesen tenido la radio, el radar, el teléfono, el ordenador o el motor de propulsión.
