Gartner ha informado de que Google podría tener alrededor de 1 millón de servidores. La información ha sido revelada después de un informe de Simon Mingay llamado “La mirada más allá del plan de Google de convertirse en Carbón Neutral”. Los estudios revelan que Google tiene más o menos, 1 millón de servidores, tres millones de ordenadores.
Peter Hidas del Gartner Group, ha publicado en la revista noruega Computerworld un artículo en el que explica el cálculo llevado a cabo para obtener el número de servidores que posee Google. El proceso que sigue es el siguiente: Google revela que invierte de 200 a 250 millones de dólares por año en su equipamiento. Google aprovecha un gran número de servidores baratos con fuente abierta (y gratis) de LINUX. Si Google gasta 900 USD para cada máquina y lo mismo para cada almacenaje y periféricos, la suma indica que Google utiliza 1 millón de servidores en us centros de datos aproximadamente.
Hidas añadió: “Los servidores modernos tienen varios centros, y cada uno de ellos puede ser entendido como un ordenador separado. Por lo tanto, el número de ordenadores es al menos 3 millones”.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic) será la primera compañía en lanzar discos Blu-ray grabables a una velocidad de 4X (BD-R), en formatos de simple y doble capa con capacidades de 25 y 50 Gbytes respectivamente.
Desde el lanzamiento del primer 1x BD-RE en 2004 la compañía japonesa ha continuado liderando el mercado en el desarrollo de tecnologías de discos Blu-ray, que permitieran una alta velocidad de lectura y una gran cantidad de copia de datos de alta definición.
Los nuevos dispositivos a 4x permiten un máximo de 144 Mbps de velocidad de transferencia de datos, por lo que podrán almacenar 1 GByte en tan solo un minuto.
Según la firma esto se ha logrado mediante la aplicación de una nueva tecnología de cambio de fase, haciendo que el láser de grabación sea más estable y preciso permitiendo además un menor ruido de las unidades.
También afirma que la tasa de error es sumamente baja, reduciéndola en una décima parte de un disco convencional, gracias al desarrollo de una nueva “película” para la superficie del disco que asegura alta fiabilidad y calidad de grabación.
Los nuevos discos de simple y doble capa llegarán al mercado en julio y septiembre de este año respectivamente.

Namely, a single-chip 0.95-inch TI DMD, 1920 x 1080 resolution, 5000:1 contrast, and a 1000 lumen brightness off a 220W UHP lamp. Inputs include HDMI 1.3, HDCP-enabled DVI, component and more with the ability to control the beast over your IP or RS232 home automation system.
Both digital inputs also support copper cable runs of up to 100-feet at full 1080p resolution.

THE MAKER of exploding batteries, Sony, is filing for a US patent on a liquid airbag for hard drives.
Sony’s big idea is that if you wrap your hard drive in a fluid filled bag it will protect it if the outer case suffers a shock.
The technology could be used in mobile devices such as cameras and media players, smartphones and laptops.
According to It World, here, Sony boffins rejected the standard idea of floating the electronics between two immiscible fluids, or using a gel-like viscous substance.
Its idea uses a fluid-filled inner skin containing “biasing units” to keep the electronics central, and a system of “irises” that adjust their resistance to liquid flow according to the force of impact. The liquid contained in the bags used could be water or silicon oil.

Designed by Adam Ohern, this Tablet PC dock aka DTR (desktop replacement docking stand) basically “transposes all of the tablets power and port functions so you don’t lose any USB functionality.” Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.
The entire setup comes with a pair of integrated speakers and a wireless keyboard/mouse. It’s a more ergonomic setup that makes you feel like you’re working on a real desktop again.

Panasonic is set to join LG with the introduction of their own 4x speed BD-R recorder. However, while LG’s GBW-H10N Blu-ray recorder burns are limited to single-layer media, Panny is boasting of a 4x burn to a dual-layer BD-R platter.
That’s 50GB in 46 minutes in case you’re keeping track. No pictures or price but you can expect Panny to go big-and-fast with product sometime later this year.

It never looked like those crazy semi-pirates over at AllOfMP3.com would stick around long, and indeed, after a couple years of legal struggles, the site has finally had its plug pulled.
Despite the site supposedly barring Russia from WTO entry, and high profile lawsuits filed on behalf of the record labels, it’s not clear at this point whether AllOfMP3 was shut down due to an internal decision or an external mandate.
Unfortunately for copyright holders, the MediaServices folks behind AllOfMP3 aren’t exactly changing directions: they’ve merely opened up a practical mirror image of AllOfMP3.com over at MP3Sparks.com, and are keeping up with their nefarious ways.
