Not a huge update like 1.8 was, 1.81 will just fix a few bugs people have found since the end of May.

DARPA, the future-leaning research branch of the Pentagon, wants a legion of little robotic wireless routers with tank treads. Called Landroids (adorable!), they would be dropped in urban warfare areas and would move around on their own to blanket an area with wireless coverage.
The cute little buggers would be disposable, meaning if one gets blown up, the others will rearrange themselves to make up for the loss of coverage. Say what you will about our nation’s military, but at least they want to make sure our soldiers have solid access to email, YouTube and pornography. God bless America.

Windows only: Freeware app iTunes Sync syncs and transfer your iTunes music to non-iPod MP3 players.
As long as your MP3 player shows up as a drive letter in Windows (and most of them do), iTunes Sync will work. You select an iTunes playlists to transfer over to the device and go.

The Compenion is a sleek concept laptop designed by Felix Schmidberger. It certainly looks like the kind of portable PC we might be carrying around in 2015, made more futuristic by its OLED touchscreen, which serves as both monitor and keyboard. You can tap away by hand or use the “senstylus” pen to control it, and through a series of docking stations the Compenion will adapt to the environment where you’re using it. For example, the home dock might have a projector for viewing video, while the office might include ergonomic stuff like an external keyboard.
As cool as smartphones are, laptops certainly aren’t going away, so the Compenion makes a decent case for next-gen mobile computing. Between its sleekness, the OLED touchscreen and innovative modular concept, it’s got a lot to going for it. Not sure about that name, though, Felix.

Toshiba anunció ayer dos nuevos descubrimientos que ayudarán a hacer realidad la tecnología de 32 nanómetros, un nuevo salto cualitativo en las escalas de integración.
Las barreras a superar en este tipo de procesos fueron presentadas por un empleado de la compañía en el actual VLSI Symposium que tiene lugar en Tokio. Según se reduce el tamaño, van apareciendo defectos debidos a que la corriente no fluye como debería. Una forma de mejorar el flujo de corriente, dijo, podría ser eliminar la resistencia del transistor. La pregunta es, ¿cómo?
Los expertos han encontrado un modo, inyectando elementos dopantes en la superficie que separa los electrodos del transistor y el substrato de silicio. Utilizando un prototipo de transistor operando a 0.7V., se ha conseguido mejorar el flujo de corriente en un 35% en comparación a los transistores tradicionales.
Toshiba también mejoró el flujo de corriente reduciendo la resistencia. Esto lo consiguieron inyectando semiconductor (silicio-germanio) en el electrodo.
Combinando estas dos tecnologías elementales con las de cableado multicapa, Toshiba ve el camino despejado para los chips basados en tecnología de 32 nanómetros e incluso más allá.

Hace unos días se desató una pequeña polémica entorno a la imagen holográfica de tres personas que aparece en el DVD de Windows Vista. Ahora Microsoft ha explicado a qué se debe la inclusión de dicho ‘mecanismo de seguridad’.
La pequeña foto de tres personas que mide tan sólo un milímetro es una de las muchas imágenes que se incluyen en el diseño holográfico, que tiene como objetivo dificultar la replicación de los originales de los DVDs de Vista.
Ha habido mucha especulación sobre quiénes eran esas personas y porqué Microsoft insertó la imagen en el DVD. El blog de Nick White, uno de los responsables del tema, explica que los que aparecen en la imagen fueron precisamente quienes diseñaron el holograma. Ahora hay disponibles unas cuantas imágenes artísticas de estos hologramas en diversos lugares de dominio público.
En Microsoft no pretendían que la imagen fuera imposible de encontrar, y el objetivo era el de añadir otro nivel de complejidad para atajar la piratería, dijo White.
