Fingers Crossed: Companies Unlocking iPhones?

At the moment, this is not much more than a website sucking email addresses from innocent victims. But if what they claim is true, iphoneunlocking.com has unlocked 1,917 iPhones from the shackles of AT&T service.

Apparently the company sent out legions of black-shirted employees to Apple launches in NYC. If anyone wants to test the site on a dumby email and a spare iPhone, hit the comments to let us know how it went. And while you’re at it, check out this site that claims to soon be unlocking iPhones for $19 a pop as pointed out by ArsTechnica. Too bad neither of these companies can magically add 3G and EV-DO while they’re at it.

Install Ubuntu on PlayStation 3

The Ubuntu documentation project has a writeup on how to install Ubuntu on PlayStation 3. In case you didn’t know, the swanky PS3 allows you to install alternative operating systems with relative ease. The tutorial demonstrates how to partition the PS3′s hard drive and install any flavor of Ubuntu including: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu. When you’re done with the process, you will still be able to play your PS3 games and watch Blu-ray DVDs like normal and run Ubuntu — although not simultaneously. Please note that you will not be able to watch Blu-ray DVDs under Ubuntu.

IPhone: Apple iPhone Dismantled

The crazy folks over at Think Secret took apart an iPhone. They’ve got 49 shots of the process, but we just wonder how many shots they’ll need to put the thing back together.

Microsoft to ease the swap from Vista to XP

MICROSOFT SEEMS to be making it easier for system builders to swap Vista for XP in the systems they build. Mainly, we assume, because no-one wants to buy Vista and they’re happy with XP, thank you very much.

Those Microsoft watchers at ZDNet say their source, a Vole named Ball, says the move isn’t a “ding” against Vista. Perhaps it’s a dong. Beats us.

Still, he did say that the way in which Microsoft lets customers dump Vista and choose XP is a bit complicated. So the beneVolent one is going to make it a bit easier for its “gold” partners.

The rest can wait because it’s all a bit complicated still, it seems.

Meanwhile, according to Ball, the said system builders can look forward to Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver in July, where they’ll be harangued left, right and centre about how good Vista is. Perhaps then they’ll learn how to persuade their customers to choose the new flop above the old established flip.

Windows Vista Tip: Easily restore previous file versions

Windows Vista users: You can easily restore previous versions of a recently used file by right-clicking on the file and navigating to the “Previous Versions” tab. Gina touched on this feature as it pertains to directories in the Windows Vista Beta, however, this restoration technique can also be applied to individual files.

You’re revising an important document and realize that the content you deleted an hour ago is information you still need. Are you out of luck? Do you have to recreate it? If you’re running Windows Vista Ultimate or Business editions, you could be in luck. These editions of Windows Vista include a shadow copy feature that enables you to access or restore previously saved versions of a document.

In case you didn’t catch it in the block above, the shadow copy feature is only available in Windows Vista Ulitmate and Windows Vista Business.
