Make Ubuntu Linux run faster

Hardware-hacks site ExtremeTech shows you how to improve Ubuntu performance using a variety of techniques.

The article is actually an entire chapter excerpted from a book on hacking Ubuntu. It covers topics such as viewing running processes, identifying resources, finding process startups, tuning kernel parameters and speeding up boot time. Granted, the focus is on the Dapper Drake version of Ubuntu, which is now two versions behind, but there's plenty of good information here. If you're fairly new to Linux or just want to learn some tricks of the tweaking trade, this is worthwhile reading.

Quickly embed an image without hotlinking

We’ve all been there: You see an image on the internet that you’d love to share, whether via a forum, your blog, or your (ick) MySpace profile, but the whole process of saving an image, then uploading it to a hosting service, then finally getting the new URL and embedding the image is a pain. But, as a card holding citizen of the internet in good standing, you also know better than hotlinking images from other people’s sites. So what’s a busy surfer to do?

Web site ImgRed (Image Redirection) lets you quickly embed an image from another web site and embed it elsewhere without leeching bandwidth from the source. Just grab the URL of the image and append it to http://imgred.com/ (e.g., http://imgred.com/http://example.com/pic.jpg). The site copies the image to their server the first time it’s requested, then serves it up permanently. Handy.

Google – Image of the Day

This humorous shirt says, “Google: we øwn your identity”. Hmm, let me see, Google does own my identity – they know my MySpace password! :) - (I don’t really care though)

iPod Video Converter (Windows)

Windows only: Freeware application iPod Video Converter converts an impressive variety of video formats to iPod-compatible video files.

Add to that integrated YouTube downloads and conversions and you’ve got yourself one snappy video swiss army knife for your iPod. The program supports both 320×240 resolutions or the new iPod standard of 640×480, along with several other tweaks to the encoding process you can perform is you’re interested in tweaking your output. We’ve covered other iPod and other video converters, as well as YouTube to iPod converters, in the past, but this is the first app I’ve seen to incorporate them all in one tight, easy to use package.
