Scan your files online with VirusTotal

Online virus scanner Virus Total checks your file for cooties with over 30 AV apps, including Kaspersky, BitDefender, F-Secure and Panda.

Upload your under-10MB file to Virus Total on the web site. If it’s under high load (which it is at the moment), you can submit your file via email to scan@virustotal.com instead. Great for those suspicious files you just grabbed off of a P2P network.

PDFCreator (Windows)

Windows only: Free, open source application PDFCreator is an all-in-one PDF Swiss Army knife.

Aside from the whole print-to-PDF functionality we're so fond of here at Lifehacker, PDFCreator has a slew of other wildly useful PDF tools, like encryption, autosave filing based on tags, and PDF merging. If PDFs aren't really your thing, you can even save files as PNG, JPG, and more. I mentioned doPDF a few weeks ago, but many readers were quick to put PDFCreator on the pedestal it deserves in the comments and show me the error of my ways. PDFCreator is free, open source, Windows only.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2 RC1 (All platforms)

All platforms: Mozilla has released Thunderbird 2 RC1, the latest version of the venerable e-mail client.

Like last year’s less-than-stable beta release, RC1 offers a wealth of new features: Gmail-style message tags, browser-style back/forward buttons for navigating message histories, folder summary pop-ups, find-as-you-type searches, an improved user interface and easy access to Gmail and .Mac accounts. Thunderbird now supports Vista as well.

The installer hung when importing my address book from Outlook Express, but after bypassing that everything went smoothly. Because this is technically a release candidate, a few bugs are sure to crop up. But if you just can’t wait to take the new Thunderbird for a spin, you should find this version stable enough for everyday use.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2 RC1 is free; it’s available for all platforms.
